Friday, Sweet Friday

And a cool and rainy Friday at that. There's no photo of Dalriada today -- I got home late, had to do laundry, and finished up a pair of socks, so I didn't make enough aran progress to warrant a pic.

But you can look at the photo of my newly completed socks here.

Aran Construction

Yesterday Sabine pointed out that I am knitting my aran in pieces and asked why I do that rather than in the round. Several reasons:

1. I think side seams give stability to a heavy garment like a cabled sweater.
2. It's easier to keep track of cable patterns if you have a "wrong" side row -- most of them have you work the cable only on the "right" side.
3. If it was knitted in the round, you'd have a heavy heavy piece of work hanging off your needle towards the finish of it -- making it harder to manage.

Those are my reasons -- anyone care to offer a rebuttal? :-)

Fearless Fair Isle

Yesterday Julie commented that she hadn't realized that the fearless fair isle could be a work-along project. Yes! You guys are welcome to knit along with me -- I plan on sharing the pattern as we go along. The drawback to this is that I can't give you exact amounts for the wool you will need -- I won't know that til I've test knitted it. I have ordered 4 ounces of Jamieson & Smith jumperweight shetland in each of the 7 colors, assuming that will be enough.

As an incentive, any of you who are willing to take the plunge and knit along with me will win a special prize. More details later!

Of Arans and Shetland Wool

Still working away on the front of Dalriada -- here it is.

Yesterday Meghan asked a question on my tag-board about Shetland wool -- does it becomes less scratchy when you wash it? My experience is that it does, a little. I always wash wool in baby shampoo and in the case of scratchy stuff, yes, I do put a bit of hair conditioner in the water when I rinse it. That does seem to make a difference.

Anyone else have any tips?

I'm still working on the fair isle pattern. Anxiously awaiting delivery of my shetland wool so I can knit a swatch!

And I think I'll design an aran pattern at some point in the next few months.

How cool is this?

Look at what I got in the mail yesterday:

It's supposed to be for organizing socks, but isn't it great for yarn? When I start the Fearless Fair Isle, I can use it to keep my colors organized!

Thanks for all your input on my charts. I'm trying to find the time to actually write up the pattern that goes with the charts. I'll try to get it done in the next week or so.

Birth of an Aran Update

And I found a bit of time to work on the aran last night. Check it out here.

Air conditioning, I salute thee

It's a hot one today in DC. This morning the weatherman cheerfully reported a high temperature of 98 degrees for today.

Birth of an Aran Update

It'sa coming along. I'm well into the body pattern. Check it out here. Wanna see a close-up of the pattern? Look here. Okay the color is much lighter than that but I'm having a hard time getting a really good indoor color photo. This is more what it looks like:

Fearless Fair Isle Update

I ordered some shetland jumperweight wool from Jamieson & Smith to do up my Fearless Fair Isle design. Just to whet your appetites, here is a thumbnail of the three colorways I developed:

What do you all think? The pattern is supposed to be butterflies and flowers. The charts look much better full-size but I just wanted to give you a sneak preview. Each design takes seven different colors and there are never more than two colors to a row, as befits a traditional fair isle.

Happy Monday!

Happy Monday, Bloggers! I've got a lot to cover in today's blog entry!

Starting with a photo of what I see when I come out of the subway across the street from where I work:

Isn't he gorgeous? No, he's not a figment of my hungover brain -- he's part of a city-wide art project called Party Animals.

Contest Results

And now what you've all been waiting for . . . the results of my contest! Thanks to Geane, Ivete, Kristy, Enjay, Kate, and Susan who all submitted wonderful entries. It was hard to choose, but the winner is . . .

Kate! With her fantastic entry of handmade necklace, bag, and change purse. How could I resist? The samples she kindly posted in her blog are gorgeous and SO just the sort of things I love. So Kate -- thanks again and please email me your snail mail addy so I can send your prize off to you.

Again, thanks to everyone who entered -- it was a lot of fun!

And now, presenting . . .

Birth of an Aran!

I cast on the stitches. Click here for an animated gif of my long tail cast on.

And I got the ribbing done. Check it out here.

The ribbing has cables in it, which I love. I make my cables without a cable needle. Wanna see how? Check it out here.

Fearless Fair Isle Update

I'm coming along with my design. I'll post the chart when I have it completed. I think I have it developed for three different colorways so you'll have some choice.
